What is LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is a professional social networking platform designed to provide registered members the ability to establish connections and communicate with a personal network of professionals, as well as seek new opportunities for career advancement and growth. 

What is LinkedIn Learning?

LinkedIn Learning is an online learning platform with over 14,000 video courses on a broad range of business and technology topics. It has all the same great content as Lynda.com, but by linking with the features and functionality of LinkedIn it offers a highly personalized experience with special insights and social engagement tools designed to help you achieve your goals.

Why is Lynda.com changing to LinkedIn Learning?

LinkedIn acquired Lynda.com several years ago and is now rebranding and integrating the online learning platform with LinkedIn, their existing professional social network, to enhance the user experience. With its new and intuitive interface, LinkedIn Learning is designed to make it easier for you to find relevant course content and includes features such as personalized course recommendations based on your job title, skills and industry.

When is Brampton Library migrating to LinkedIn Learning?

The upgrade to LinkedIn Learning is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 (allow for up to 18 hours of downtime). During this time, Lynda.com will be unavailable to all users. Current Lynda.com users will receive an email from LinkedIn Learning when the upgrade is complete with an account activation link and directions to get started with LinkedIn Learning.

You will have access to all the same content that was previously available through Lynda.com. All current Lynda users’ learning history and certificates will be transferred to LinkedIn Learning during the upgrade.

Will I have access to the same content in LinkedIn Learning as I did with Lynda.com?

Yes. You will have access to content that was previously available through Lynda.com. 

Will I lose any information on my current Lynda.com account when Brampton Library migrates to LinkedIn Learning?

No. When the upgrade is complete,all of your history, in progress, and bookmarks will be migrated over to your new LinkedIn Learning account. It may take up to 24 hours for all of your Lynda.com history to appear depending on the volume of activity you have.  The most recent history will appear first followed by older activity.

Do I need to connect my LinkedIn profile?

During the activation process, you will have the following options:

  1. Connect your existing LinkedIn account 


  1. Create a LinkedIn account.

If you choose to connect your LinkedIn profile or create a LinkedIn account, LinkedIn may utilize data on your profile to tailor a more intuitive, personalized user experience. For example, your coursework may be used to recommend profile updates and jobs or your LinkedIn profile may be used to provide course recommendations on LinkedIn Learning. 

In terms of account privacy, the only action that you need to do to create a profile is add a first name, last name, and email address. You have the same controls that all LinkedIn members do, including the ability to set your profile to Private Mode as soon and choose to not have your profile searchable on search engines as soon as you sign up.

What are the benefits of connecting my LinkedIn profile?

One advantage of linking accounts is that LinkedIn Learning can provide you with personalized course recommendations based on information shared on your LinkedIn profile (i.e., job title, skills, industry) and on what LinkedIn users with similar positions are learning. Another is that you can preserve your LinkedIn Learning course history, even if you leave Brampton and start using LinkedIn Learning with your library card from another municipality. 

Can I continue to use Lynda.com while the migration is happening?

No. Unfortunately, you’ll have to take a small break from using Lynda.com or LinkedIn Learning during the migration, starting Wednesday, September 25, 2019 (allow for up to 18 hours of downtime).

Can I switch back to Lynda.com after migrating to LinkedIn Learning?

LinkedIn is retiring the Lynda.com platform. Once you migrate to LinkedIn Learning, your Lynda.com account won’t be accessible.

Will I receive a notice after the migration is complete?

Yes, Current Lynda.com users will receive an email from LinkedIn Learning with an account activation link when the upgrade is complete. If you are not a current Lynda.com user or did not receive an email, simply access the LinkedIn Learning link by visiting the ‘eLearning’ page from the digital toolbar at www.bramptonlibrary.ca.

What information will be shared with Brampton Library if I link my LinkedIn profile to a LinkedIn Learning account?

Linking your LinkedIn account to your LinkedIn Learning account does not give Brampton Library access to your private LinkedIn data. Brampton Library’s Admin will only be able to see your LinkedIn Learning activity (i.e., your name, course usage data).

How can I control the information LinkedIn has about me?

You can set your sharing preferences by going to account settings. You can review the settings in each category to better understand how LinkedIn uses your personal data and how you can control it.

  • Account settings control you sign-in credentials, site preferences, third-party integrations, and more.
  • Privacy settings change how LinkedIn uses your data—and how others, including recruiters, can collect and use information about you and your activity on LinkedIn.
  • Advertising settings control what information about you LinkedIn uses for advertising purposes.
  • Communications settings manage the frequency and type of communications you may receive from LinkedIn.

Where can I learn more about privacy settings for my LinkedIn profile?

What if I lose or replace my library card after signing up with LinkedIn Learning?

If you already activated your LinkedIn Learning account, your learning history is now tied to your LinkedIn profile. If you lose or replace your library card, you can get a new library card and your learning history will still be available on LinkedIn Library. 

Can I use the LinkedIn Learning mobile app?

Yes, but only after you activate your LinkedIn Learning account via desktop or mobile web browser as you will need to connect your library card number and pin to your LinkedIn Learning account. After this, you can login using the mobile app.
