Brampton-based, Pakistani-Canadian mixed media and film artist Sima Naseem is the inaugural recipient of the Brampton Arts Organization (BAO) and Brampton Library's new Brampton Artist in Residency program. 

  • Sima invites everyone to drop in to chat about art during her office hours every Tuesday until the end of November. 
  • Youth aged 10-14, registration for Sima's workshops with you in mind, is now open. 
  • On Sunday, December 10 at 11 a.m., please join us for a free public screening and celebration of Sima and Brampton youth’s co-created short, stop-motion film with puppets.

Artist in Residence Public Office Hours

All ages

Open to all, Sima’s public office hours provide mentorship to aspiring artists who are interested in developing their skills, networking opportunities for future collaboration, and the chance to meet her and chat about art-related topics. Sima’s office is on the second floor of our Four Corners branch. Drop by anytime between 4 and 8 p.m on Tuesdays.

Artist in Residence Workshop Series

10–14 years

Students are invited to join Sima to build a story and create puppet characters for a collaborative short stop-motion film. 

Workshop 1:

Four Corners             October 15           11 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

Students will be given the prompt, “together we flourish,” and brainstorm potential stories together. Once the group decides on a story, each student will design their own characters.

Workshop 2:

Four Corners            October 22            11 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

Using the characters created in the Storytelling Workshop, participants will build puppets using recycled goods, old clothing, and magazines. Don't forget to bring your recycled materials!

Workshop 3:

Four Corners           October 29               11 a.m.–5 p.m.

Students will learn about stop-motion animation to bring puppet characters to life using greenscreens.

Workshop 4:

Four Corners           November 5             11 a.m.–5 p.m.

Students will learn about stop-motion animation to bring puppet characters to life using greenscreens.

Film Screening and Artist in Residency Celebration 

Four Corners             December 10             11 a.m.

Save the date! Sima Naseem and her youth co-creaors will host a film screening and gallery, displaying the puppets, sets, and artwork used to create their film. Join us for a meet and greet with light refreshments. Everyone is welcome to attend.

About the Artist 

Sima Naseem is a Brampton-based Pakistani-Canadian mixed media and film artist who works with multiple mediums with a focus on animation, and public art. She enjoys telling stories of exploration, discovery, and her personal life. Sima uses bright colours and playful designs to create a positive impact on her community through inclusivity, diversity and inspirational imagery. Sima is always looking for new and creative ways to share her cultural and personal experiences through art.
