Why is remote access ending for Ancestry Library Edition?

Ancestry Library Edition (provided by our vendor ProQuest in agreement with Ancestry.com) was previously made available for access in-library only. In March 2020, ProQuest and Ancestry allowed libraries to provide remote "at home" access to Ancestry Library Edition on a temporary basis. This decision was made to remove access barriers when libraries were closed due to the pandemic. Neither anticipated that this temporary measure would be extended over a period of two years.

We have now been made aware that since libraries have reopened, Ancestry will now be removing remote access as a result of prior agreements with publishers and other business considerations.

Though the last day for remote ‘at home’ access to Ancestry Library Edition will be December 30, 2021, we are pleased to continue providing on-site access to this resource at all Brampton Library Branches.

Will there be a remote access option in the future?

At this time, ProQuest and Ancestry have not provided any indication of future plans to provide remote access to Ancestry Library Edition. The Ontario Library Service (OLS) has promised to continue advocating for a remote access option, and Brampton Library will also do its part in collecting and sharing customer feedback with OLS, ProQuest, and Ancestry.
